This video definitely hits close to home for me. This may be a topic that I will revisit again. After having watched it and critiqued myself a few times, I know there is more that I'd like to say on this topic. It is not easy having hair that is different from the people in charge of doing your hair in this industry. There is still a huge knowledge and experience gap when it comes to the education of black hair in the hair industry. And because of that gap, many black actresses pay the price on set and on Broadway. My experience is specific to Broadway and theatre, so that's what I talk about here. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you feel like your rights are being violated, or you are made to feel like a problem simply because someone doesn't understand your hair, or doesn't want to do the work to understand your hair, I encourage you to take up for yourself. It won't be easy, but that is when change happens.
